monday night had a pretty good workout/deadlift session, my back felt fine. then tuesdaty after work i took a nap for about 45 mins, and when i woke up. my left ass cheak had kind of a knot or a cramp. like a charlie horse. well i rubbed it for a couple secs and didnt think anything of it. well it gets tighter and tighter as the night goes on and i start getting a severly sharp pain and throb in my hip socket. it was ungodly all night, let me tell you i didnt sleep a min til around 530 am to about 7. dude it was throbing so bad in my hip socket i was gonna cry. i went to the chiropractor and apparently all these muscles that are running different ways in you lumbar, glute, hip, and hamstring were in a knot strangling my sciatic nerve which goes through your hip socket, and is 2 fingers thick. well he semi worked the knot out, my ass was rock hard, like a softball, but there is still major pain in the socket. its bad somtimes. im just taking ibuprofen and a perc every couple hours and am just laying here. i have to see him again fri, he says hell have it releived after fri. well see. its throbbing like a mofo right now.

ironically, my boy is getting cut next fri to have a peice of L5 removed that broke when it bulged, it is hitting the sciatice nerve and causes great pain. hes been walking around like that for 3 months. wtf. but his isnt going through his socket, it going down his leg.

YIKES man...that sounds aweful. I've never heard of anything like that happening, but I hope it gets better soon.

its called piriformis syndrome. there was just a long thread over musclemayhem about it. its quite common with bodybuilders.

damn bro thats tough sorry to hear about that. Hopefully your chiro can get it better after friday good luck man.

Here's a link I found on it on diagnosis and treatment...for the guys like me that have never heard of it. Bro...I really hope this gets better soon...are you working with a physician or just a chiropracter?

"The piriformis syndrome is diagnosed primarily on the basis of symptoms and on the physical exam. There are no tests that accurately confirm the diagnosis, but X-rays, MRI, and nerve conduction tests may be necessary to exclude other diseases. Some of the other causes of sciatica include disease in the lumbar spine (e.g. disc herniation), chronic hamstring tendinitis, and fibrous adhesions of other muscles around the sciatic nerve.

Once properly diagnosed, treatment is undertaken in a stepwise approach. Initially, progressive piriformis stretching is employed, starting with 5 seconds of sustained stretch and gradually working up to 60 seconds. This is repeated several times throughout the day. It is important that any abnormal biomechanical problems, such as overpronation of the foot or other coexisting conditions, are treated. This stretching can be combined with physical therapy modalities such as ultrasound. If these fail, then injections of a corticosteroid into the piriformis muscle may be tried. Finally, surgical exploration may be undertaken as a last resort."

Do you think it is brought on by heavy squatting, etc.? Sounds bad. Makes me want to make sure I keep perfect form.

the chiro said its been building up over time. and sure heavy lifting is involved. the muscles just spasmed, like any other could, but the sciatic nerve is involved which is the problem.

that sucks. sorry to hear that. shit always happens when your making good progress. I have a fucking hernia in my groin. it bulges in and out like a fucking golf ball! it doesnt hurt, but will it give out soon? who knows. ive been nursing it, but its hard to really push hard in any excercise.

The best part is i dont even know how i got it, and i have no health insurance!!!

DB006 - what's up - how you doing?? I had similar problem years back - my mid-
upper back muscles would spasm - it was like a HUGE fucking knot in my back.
My woman would try to massage it loose with all her weight but the knot was
like a fish flopping around in there. The knoted muscles started to pull my spine
out of whack - to the side of the knot - and that put pressure on my siatic nerve.
I would have to brace myself against the wall just to cough or sneeze, the pain was
so bad. Had a chiropractor break it up with DEEP tissue massage. Him and his
physical therapist were taking turns running their elbows up my back with all their
weight. Umbelievable pain but released the knot. I remember feeling their sweat
dripping on my back. My back is my strongest bodypart and I was pulling big weight.
That had to start that knot. Let us know how you doing.
