2022 CrossFit Games Event Eight “Rinse N’ Repeat” Results — Campbell Swims to the Win, Khrennikov Crushes the Ski Erg

The fourth day of the 2022 CrossFit Games in Madison, WI, was fueled with drama. Athletes knew the first event would combine ski ergs and swimming. They also knew that the top of both Individual leaderboards was unstable.
Five-time Fittest Woman on Earth® Tia-Clair Toomey assumed the overall leader position after a stellar performance on Day Three to make up for a lackluster Day One. Mal O’Brien sat 44 points behind her in second overall after sitting atop the leaderboard for the first two days.
Ricky Garard‘s return to the Games following the service of his four-year doping suspension involved wearing the leader’s jersey through all three days of competition thus far. He still held the overall lead entering event eight. Still, defending Fittest Man on Earth®, Justin Medeiros, had the momentum entering the day after making up 62 points of his deficit to Garard on the overall leaderboard in Event Seven.

Event Eight Recap
The Women’s first heat got underway, and there was an apparent skill gap across the heat when it came to swimming. Kato, Powers, Speegle, and Freyová were in the lead early, as the entire heat got through the buy-in round one. Kato, Powers, and Freyová emerged first from the water in the second round to tackle their 10-calorie round on the ski erg.
Every athlete in the heat remained for round three. Those with more swimming experience chose to perform flip-turns at one end of the pool. Those who were less experienced used open turns. The former is faster, but the latter allows for an additional breath before freestyling back down the pool.
Round four began, and no one was eliminated yet, though Fuliano only had six seconds to space after completing the round three ski erg. Round five retained all athletes, but Spencer, Kaya, and Fuliano were on the edge of elimination. Round six was the first round without a full field — Fuliano, Kaya, and Spencer didn’t make it through round five.
Round six claimed Fuselier, and round seven ran without her. Freyová and Kato tossed the lead back and forth in the first round for max calories. Freyová finished three calories ahead by the final swim. Powers had the fastest swim in the final round and got to work on the erg to make up a four-calorie deficit to Freyová.
Kato took over the lead by a single calorie and sought to maintain it for the final 20 seconds. Ultimately, she scored 124 calories — enough to win the heat in a tie with Ellie Turner.
Women’s Heat Two
Toomey was featured in heat two and is historically dominant in pool events at the Games. She was flanked in the center lane of the pool by Lawson and O’Brien. Kato and Turner’s calorie count of 124 was the mark to beat. Toomey cleared the first swim in 35 seconds.
The swim times stayed consistent as Toomey cleared the second swim in 35 seconds, as did Adams. Everyone in the heat cleared the calorie requirement with more than 20 seconds to rest on the apron of the pool. Toomey was out of the third swim in 36 seconds and continued to lead the field even though most of the event was about survival, not pace.
Toomey repeated the 36-second swim in round four. Adams, Brandon, and O’Brien stayed on pace with Toomey, and it seemed like swim times would not determine who reached the top of the leaderboard in this event.
Barnhart, Toomey, O’Connell, and Campbell emerged out of the water first in round five. Everyone in the heat completed the ski erg to enter the pool for round six. Barnhart took a slight lead after the swim, but anyone who cleared 18 calories on the ski erg would advance to the rounds for max calories, where the event will be won or lost.
All 20 athletes in the heat made it to round six to compete for max calories. Barnhart and Campbell were out of the pool in their fastest swim times thus far. Toomey turned on the jets, as did Horvath, and they reached within a few calories of Campbell’s lead. Barnhart stayed in the mix for first place.
Campbell furthered her lead in the final swim, taking a seven-calorie lead over Toomey. Barnhart was between them, and Horvath pulled the ski erg at a rate of 1,400 calories per hour to make big moves in the final 30 seconds. Clearly, Kato and Turner’s heat one calorie counts would not hold. Campbell took the event win with 138 calories.

Men’s Heat One
The 20 athletes on the lower half of the overall leaderboard entered the pool for heat one. Malheiros was the first athlete out of the pool and had over a minute to rest before diving back in for round two with the rest of the field. Round two saw Karavis, Fiebig, and Greashaber up in front with Malheiros. The entire field appeared to pace themselves to keep their heart rates low.
A slow swim is how you recover.
Fikowski’s right ankle was taped up, though it wasn’t clear if he suffered an injury or how much his ankle was limiting his performance. All the athletes made it through round four without issue. Malheiros assumed a full squat position right after completing the ski erg, as he’d done in each round prior.
The entire field made it to round six, led by Malheiros, who rested in the bottom of a squat again. Fikowski emerged from the pool toward the front of the field in round six, as his height was advantageous to cover the 50 yards down and back. Everyone reached the two rounds for max calories, and the actual test in this event began.
Briant and Fikowski finished the swim in less than 30 seconds and battled for the lead. Pepper pulled the ski erg at 1,800 calories per hour and leaped to the front of the field. He led by three calories over Greasehaber and Fikowski as they entered the final swim.
Briant and Fikowski cleared the pool first again in the final round. Fikowski ditched his swim cap and goggles to go for broke on the last ski erg. Pepper still held a 2,000-calorie per hour pace, and it kept his lead despite Fikowski putting in his max effort. Pepper’s insane speed on the ski erg was enough to win the heat with 156 calories.
Men’s Heat Two
Medeiros sought to clear the 25 points that separated him and Garard for the overall lead as the two swam next to each other in the center of the pool. Ohlsen and Khrennikov finished the eight calories on the ski erg first in the buy-in round.
Everyone hopped into the pool for round two as the commentary team mentioned that Vellner trained with Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte to improve his efforts in the pool. Lochte has 12 Olympic medals (six gold, three silver, and three bronze).
Round three appeared routine as each athlete in the field maintained their heart rates relatively comfortably. Unsurprisingly, Koski led the swims, as three of the Games event wins in his career were swim-based events (Event One in 2021, Ocean Battle in 2016, and Peer Paddle in 2015).
Rounds four, five, and six were carbon copies of each other, with Koski and Lazar ?uki? exiting the pool first, but all athletes cleared the calorie requirements to remain in the event. Krennikov and Adler were towards the front with Koski and ?uki?, with Medeiros and Mayer only a few calories behind their pace.
Everyone dove into the pool for round seven, and the crowd came alive as Khrennikov egged them on. Koski cleared the pool first and traded the lead with ?uki?, one calorie ahead of Medeiros. The defending champ held a multiple-calorie lead over Garard. Khrennikov entered the event in third place overall and kept a 1,700-calorie per hour pace to overtake the lead in the event.
All 20 men dove back into the pool for the final swim. Koski made up some time in the swim and lit the ski erg up on this last effort. Khrennikov held onto a three-calorie lead once everyone maxed out on the ski erg. Koski appeared to be a madman in the final 30 seconds, desperately trying to close the gap between him and Khrennikov. It was not enough, as Khrennikov closed the door with 160 calories to win the event.
Day Four Continues
Events nine and 10 are scheduled for 2:15 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. CDT, respectively. There will be a cut of the bottom 10 athletes in each Individual division on the overall leaderboard after event 10. The final day of competition on Aug. 7, 2022, has three events scheduled before the Fittest on Earth® are crowned.
