I did them today for the first time in a while and I'm sore as hell. Now I know why I quit doing them for a while. I did them on a smith machine with around 150 pounds starting out, I know I'm going to be sore as hell tomorrow and Friday

I'm curious about technique on lunges. I've seen them performed lunging once, then stepping up stopping at the standing position, then lunging with the other leg, then stepping back up, and then there's going from lunge to lunge like a large stepping walk. Which would possibly be the most effective? It seems to me that the lunge to lunge wouldn't be quite as safe to do since there's more potential to lose your balance.

I've only done them once, but I did them on the Smith Machine with my feet in a set position. 10 one way, switch feet and 10 the other way. I'm afraid to try walking lunges. I'm afraid I'd come down too fast and bash my knee on the floor.

It dosen't fell right to me doing them on a smith machine.. I like to do them walking.. When I do them..

I either do them on the smith machine or walking and in the gym that I train, there's not a whole lot of room to do walking lunges. The lunges where you step out then back then step out on the other foot really bother me, plus I tend to lose my balance. I don't get as much out of them as I do with either walking or fixed position lunges.
