I have had some serious appetite issues lately due to this cold I'm finally getting over. Besides b12 and the usual, is there anything else I can do to speed up my recovery and get my appetite back?

synthetek has a pretty good product for that. Check out the site.......... or EQ, lol

Sounds like your liver is stressed from the cold - fighting the illness and also any pills you would have taken. Fix that and your appetite will be back.

I'm finally just now getting my appetite back to where I can finish a meal. It has really sucked. I lost 6 lbs and literally a 1/2 inch off my arms--I shrunk really bad. I'm hoping I can gain that back really fast.

If this is the case, you could go with some synthergine or himalaya liver care. You could always load up on antioxidants with vitamin c, vitamin e, and juice plus.

It might not be the healthiest thing, but I find it hard to choke down much of anything but simple carbs when I'm getting over being sick. I think it's kind of the same process as to how a lot of people get on really unhealthy diets. If I start out eating a lot of simple carbs, I'm hungry again soon after I eat and am ready to eat again, so I get in the habit of being hungry again every hour or so. Once I've gotten in the habit of eating throughout the day again, I try to shift toward more protein and healthier foods. When I don't have much of an appetite to start with, it's really hard to eat heavy things or things I don't already want, but once I get used to being hungry again on a regular basis, it's no problem. Plus, glycogen levels are probably somewhat low after not eating much for a while anyway, so it probably won't hurt to eat more simple carbs than usual when getting well. If you want to try this, just make sure you follow the carbs with at least some protein right from the start. Your digestive system will be eager to soak it up when your insulin spikes after eating carbs.

This might not work for everyone, or might just sound weird, but this works pretty well for me. The way my body works, it's kind of like sugars are to appetite as melatonin is to sleep. They both help to get my body used to a regular schedule of the associated activity.

That's exactly what I had to do on a lot of those days. Simple carbs seemed to be the only thing that my stomach would tolerate.

That's because mostly everything else contains fats, which stress the liver even more. Your body is using the nausea as a warning system.

Hey Big A, why do you suggest liver stress? I know we're all in agreement about the end result (that carbs are easier to eat), but I don't think that eating fat would stress the liver any more than carbs in the short term. Fatty liver, a form of liver disease, often accompanies obesity and obesity results from eating a prolonged high calorie and often high fat diet, but consuming a reasonable amount of fat shouldn't cause any additional liver stress in the short term. Also, I don't think saudades had nausea when he was getting better (sorry if he did and I missed it), I think he just didn't feel like eating anything.

No disrespect at all - I know you don't get to be a pro by not knowing your shit - but liver damage is a scary thing and I don't want people with a low appetite to jump to conclusions and think they're having liver trouble. Hell, if struggling to eat enough calories is a sign of liver damage, I should damn well have a will drawn up by now! :)

I'd be in 100% agreement if saudades had mono or some other illness that could cause hepatitis, especially if he caught that while on orals. If that were the case I'd want him to get his ass to the hospital ASAP, but I think he just had a bad cold. I tend to not feel like eating anything at all for a few days when I get really sick, then I have a really hard time eating anything heavy because my stomach is just used to being empty.

You may try supplementing with some digestive enzymes. Really after illness, you just need time. If you had a fever or some type of infection, it is the body's natural response to fast in order to rid itself of infection. The reason for your loss of appetite perhaps. Fasting puts your body into a catabolic state and breaks things down, including the infection. It's like the old saying, feed a cold and starve a fever. Just don't rush things, since after being sick you can get sick again really easy if you aren't properly recovered. The appetite will come back soon enough.

I did go to the doctor for antibiotics which really helped. I'm getting better in that I am able to get a good meal down now. Whatever I had is sure taking its time leaving my system. I may have to agree with BigA in that my liver has been stressed since I have had slightly elevated enzyme levels for years due to HRT. It has been a pretty slow recovery, down to 202 lbs from 208-210. Only yesterday and today have I actually felt very hungry. The thing that is interesting is that some foods didn't cause the nausea. Carbs like pasta didn't and peanut butter didn't so I've been using them to increase my calorie intake, and I think it has helped.

I have to say it really sucks being down on strength and size. My body likes to eat certain muscles, first being chest then arms, then legs. There's a machine that does a decline press in my gym, and I was at 360 lbs for 8 reps on that thing. I can barely budge 340 for 4 reps now so I know I lost muscle from my chest. Lost 1/2" from my arms, down to 18.5" now. I think I lost some size from my legs but strangely enough, they seem to be as strong as they were before--maybe I'm just imagining it. Anyway, I'll be working to gain back this month what I lost. I suppose we all have setbacks now and then.
