Ok, here's the deal, I've been at this a long time. I'm 36 years old and started lifting when I was about 16. Lately though I keep getting plagued by recurring injuries. And not even the same injury that keeps coming back. I'll be making good progress for 3, 6 or 9 months and then BAM! tendonitis in my elbow (about 9 months ago) tendonitis in my wrist (2 months ago) sore knees or some other joint type problem. And of course the doctor says "rest". I'm sure you all know how difficult that is. Now I'm back at it after "resting" for two months, but the wrist is still sore. I've found that wearing a brace while training biceps and chest helps immensely and also to wear it the day after. I use glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and just started taking more essential fatty acids like flax and fish oil. Are there any other suggestions out there or do I just need to face it that after all these years my joints are simply wearing down?

Just curious as to how you've been training all these years. Heavy ass weights probably take their toll. Knee/elbow sleeves, wrist wraps, and such should temporarily help. Personally, I think we need to overload on the glucosamine were them to really show some effect.

It might be tough with your elbow and wrist, but try to do exercises that might not
agrivate them as much. I had to lay off bench for over a year once because of my
shoulder. I did machines or whatever else didn't hurt. The EFA's ect. might help.
I also got tendinitis in my elbow bad at one point. I figured out the exercise that was
agrivating it but didn't want to stop doing cus I thought I might shrink. I finally
couldn't take the pain anymore - stoped that exercise - and elbow got better. Also
try some Alieve (or something like it) before working out. Not long term but it might
get you through for a while and mabey some of your supps will kick in.

Mate, also 36, played pro beach vball for about 15 years. Joint problem never really went away, surgery was suggested for shoulder but it would have meant two years off. Elbows and knees and back have stopped me on and off over the years. I use glucosamine, chondroitin aswell, some good relief for back mainly. Shoulder and elbow required constant work, very controlled movements. Check your form and slow right down. For the pain, anti inflam gel, I use ibuprofen gel, not sure what brand you have where you are, here in Aus I use Nerofen gel. I always have a tube with me. After intense workout or match. Ice the area, get the swelling down as quick as possible as it will only irritate the area more. Also elbow and knee braces or wraps gave me more confidence in the gym.
Good luck bro.

Thanks for the encouraging advice. I've always avoided using wrist/knee wraps because of the theory that by wrapping the jonts you aren't allowing them to get stronger. Now I'm doing it because without wrapping I lose to much time in the gym. The doctor suggests a cortizone shot, but I'm not in favor of that at this point. Has anyone see any research on what negative impact icing may have on growth? Common sense tells me that by reducing the blood flow through icing, growth is going to be hindered. As for training, I've mostly trained with medium volume and heavy weights to failure on the last one or two sets. Most recently I've used the Dogg Crap method that you can find a description of here at MC.

I was offered cortizone and turned it down as well.
Regarding icing hindering growth. If you have inflamtion around a joint I think it will hold you back more from using the joint until the swelling goes down. The pain I used to get for days afterwards stopped me from going anywhere near a gym. Where as icing directly afterwards meant I woke up the next day and was ready to go with only mild discomfort.
In saying that, I wasnt going for growth at that stage, more strength and flexibility.

I wouldn't worry too much about icing and the effects it has on blood flow. In the grand scheme of things, your muscles have much more time throughout the day to grow and respond to your workouts than the time you spend icing them

IGF buddy. It seriously works. Now i dont know about actually placing on the elbo, but... I had tendonitis in my forearm and applied it right on the area that it hurt. Pain was seriously gone in weeks. Never had it again either.

Now if you cant apply it in the region, no worry. It will still strengthen your tendons.
