Why Does Everyone Hate Me? The Psyche of a Bodybuilder!

Anyone who has ever prepared for a bodybuilding show or body event will attest to the paranoia that seeps into the mind. For some, a glance from a stranger can ignite a story – they hate me – while for others, that same glance can mean the exact opposite. Both are just stories because we really do not know what anyone is thinking, and assuming what others are thinking does not make it true, even if the mind can find compelling evidence to support its particular position.

So what drives the creation of these stories? First, we must recognize that the source of all stories lies within us. All stories start with us, and we can choose to end them, but only if we are willing to accept responsibility that we are, in fact, their creators. Our mind creates stories because it attempts to make sense of things, having only limited information. This limited information conflicts with a primary mental desire to create certainty, so the mind has devised a way around that by making up things to appease this primary need. The mind also craves the uncertainty of excitement and newness, so one can easily see why we can never seem to find balance.
During a bodybuilding preparation, this entire process of making up stories is intensified to a very high level because there is so much uncertainty. The enormous amount of uncertainty puts the mind in a tailspin because it is desperately trying to make sense of everything, so it has to create stories that create a level of certainty. So, when someone looks at me in the gym, my mind really does not know what they are thinking, so it makes up a story: they are jealous, they hate me, or whatever else it can come up with in order to appease the anxiety of not knowing. This is why athletes need constant affirmation from their support teams.
Right about now you may have realized that I am using bodybuilding as a specific example of what happens to every human being who faces an uncertain situation. When uncertainty infiltrates the human psyche, story creation is the method it uses to cope. Up to now, this mind pattern ran automatically when uncertainty occurred, but now we have the awareness that it exists. Being aware gives us the opportunity to investigate and discover how uncertainty leads to many of our actions that result in some very painful outcomes.
In this exploration, we will discover that uncertainty is a very powerful emotion that we do not have to try to escape or alleviate. We observe how we need to experience the rawness of this cutting-of-the-flesh kind of experience. Sitting through the uncertainty is very hard because the mind's impulse is to alleviate it or escape from it. At first, our mind will work against us, but by remaining in the fire of a mind that is about to blow and emerging on the other side without doing a thing, we will discover something amazing. It was just a mind storm, and all is well, like it has always been. This is the hidden truth behind our incessant need to create stories.

That's a great post! I remember over the course of several years having conversations with girls I was dating and them telling me how frustrating it was for them to get it across to me that they liked me. I always assumed that a girl would look at me or talk to me for other reasons.
Now I know the truth.... I am loved by all women :-)

Bodybuilders defnitely have a strange psyche. I know I've heard most of the guys on MC say at some point that they feel small. It's just so crazy that the biggest people in society today can think of themselves as being too small.

Yup it's called bigorexia, and I know I've got it!

I thought it was smallophobia....

A bit off track here but speaking of our psyche, my manager at my gym and I lock horns all the time on our training methods. Because we work with a lot of overweight. middle aged, deconditioned women, I realize w/o doubt they have self esteem issues that we as trainers have to dance around. How many of you out there respond favorably to what I call "in your face" training? Meaning more blunt, right to the point verbal encouragment? I know I do....now what makes us different too is that I would think most of us would respond to that, as opposed to the laid back, politically correct "now thats OK Mrs Jones I know it hurts so we'll stop" approach.

Not me, call me a name, yell at me and get my ass fired up! Don't about worry about insulting me I won't take it personally! Anyone here agree w/this??

I think your approach would be great for men, but I don't know about women. Men love the trash talk, but I think women need a lot more encouragement.

I'm a trainer too .. I have to agree with the politically correct approach . Our main objective is to ensure the client does not sustain any injuries on our watch . I like to be pushed . I've hurt everything I own but not everyone is up for that . I get can a woman to lose 90 pounds in a year at her pace and in her comfort level without all the drama you see on the biggest loser . That kind of tv really sends the wrong message . Health and fitness are a lifetime investment not a quick fix .

One thing to note .. although we would all give our left nut to be "Jay" the majority of my female clients think that huge look is not that hot . In fact many have called it gross .. Hottness is subjective of course .. There are women who love that look too .. So are we doing it for the "chics " or because we have some childhood issues of being small and we now want to intimidate ,get the respect of others or do we just love pushing ourselves physically to our limits ?

Myself personally I grew up athletic (not real gifted though) but was never big...hence the affection I have for BB and the idea of getting big. But from that evolved the idea of pushing myself thru my limits which further intrigues me.

Speaking of which, what do you guys say when a female gives the age old reply of "ehh thats gross" I always tell them that fat is gross...

There is nothing we can say. Most women think it's gross, that's just how it is. Buckns is right...it's strange that we want to be that way "to impress women" when women don't find it attractive.

Speaking for myself I will never look like Cutler or Coleman or Heath. So yes a lot of women do find that unappealing however there aren't too many guys will ever look like that. I'm just happy as hell to be 52, low BF, fair amt of muscle and still compete.

FWIW I can sort of understand why women may not find a veiny over vascular guy attractive.

Right, Survivor...women are usually thinking of the really huge guys when they say that. I went to a show last year and the ad for the show had Branch Warren on it and they all said how gross it was. I tried to tell them that he was one of the top 5 bodybuilders in the world and no one at the show would even be close to that.

Almost every woman I know or have ever trained thinks that male bodybuilders, especially top Olympian bodybuilders are absolutely disgusting. The veins, the muscle everything. I have always loved it, the freakier the better but I like that on men and women bodybuilders. "Regular" people have no idea about the work, and dedication that goes into bodybuilding. There is a mindset that because bodybuilders use steroids that is why they look like that. Yes there is some truth to that but you cannot take gear, sit on your ass and develop a winning body. As most of you know without the proper nutrition and training it just doesn't matter what you take. I had the opportunity to have a girlfriend down here with me for the last week before the Nationals and during the competition. She was amazed at all that goes into it. I think a lot of people just have no idea. In fact I know they don't. Just get ready for a show and see what kind of silly things you get asked. Or why can't you skip your cardio, or why do you have a timer set every 2 hours to eat, or why do you cook all week long and eat out of tupperwear? I have a great respect for bodybuilders as I know what it takes. From a female point of view, if you guys think girls think you are disgusting, just image what they think of me. Being female with a lot of muscle is even less accepted. At the end of the day I love to train, I love to be big and to hell with what anyone else thinks. I have a husband who loves it, and my family may not understand it but they support me. That is all I can ask for. Keep growing!!

Yes that was great view. Most people think to compete in BB we do simple BS stuff like jumping jacks, pushups etc. Then again 99% of the general public is in such horrid shape that they cheat death every morning they wake up alive.

I remember a long time ago when I was at a chamber of commerce banquet and the MC introduced me because my gym was a sponsor, he said something like "now survivor, he looks at things a little differently. When he works out, he trains for war, when he eats its not for flavor its to feed muscle. Every minute of everyday he looks for ways to build more and more muscle" and so on. He was also a gym member so he knew. But that goes back to the Psyche of a bodybuilder. We do have a much different view of life. And I thank God for it
