PNBA Natural Bodybuilder Derek Joe Compares In-Season Vs Off-Season Physique

Image via Instagram @djoe.hype
PNBA Natural Olympia Classic Physique champ Derek Joe compares his onstage body with his off-season physique.
Bodybuilders don’t walk around with the same physique year-round. Most of the year, the shredded body they have when posing on stage during a show is much different from their off-season physique. Professional Natural Bodybuilder Associaton (PNBA) Natural Olympia Classic Physique champ Derek Joe shared a post on social media to compare his physique before a competition and when he’s bulking.
Derek Joe is a multi-media contracted athlete who won the Classic Physique category at 2021 Natural Olympia. On April 16, 2022, Derek Joe shared photos of himself on Instagram, comparing his physique a couple of days before his first competition in 2021 to when he was at his heaviest weight this year after bulking. Derek Joe stated:
“The picture on the left is of me last year two days before the first show of the season at 162-164 lbs.
The picture on the right is while I was near the top of my bulk this year, around 204 lbs. I’ve been fluctuating between 199-202 lbs for the last six weeks.”
Joe is undergoing a 20-week prep for the INBA PNBA Natural Universe show in Tampa, Florida, September 2-3, 2022. Joe says that his ideal stage weight will be around 170-175 pounds, but he mentions that it will ultimately depend on how he looks as the competition approaches.
Below you can see Derek Joe’s complete statement and physique comparison.

Bodybuilder’s Body Fat In-Season Vs. Off-Season Physique
Of course, bodybuilders have extremely low body fat levels as they compete onstage. It’s not sustainable to maintain these body fat percentages year-round, though. Bodybuilders must go through a bulking phase to build muscle during the off-season. Also, it’s not healthy to have too low body fat levels. 3x Natural Olympia Classic Physique champ Brandon Lirio says, “you need to be able to say goodbye to the abs and let your hormones rebalance and gain.”
According to ACE, essential body fat for men and women is 2-5% (men) and 10-13% (women). When bodybuilders are in-season, they have rigorous diet and training protocols to keep them hovering around these essential levels. That’s why their weight will fluctuate drastically throughout the year. For example, Derek Joe is 40 pounds lighter in the photo on the left compared to the image on the right above. And as you can see, his body fat percentage is drastically higher during the off-season.
Nutrition
Of course, bodybuilders’ diets play a crucial role in the low body fat levels they can get down to. Competitive bodybuilders maintain a pretty rigorous diet all year, but they’re more flexible during the offseason than during the season. On the other hand, their nutrition is extremely strict during the season, as you’d imagine.
For example, carb cycling is a popular dieting method some bodybuilders will utilize to shred fat. Carb cycling consists of low-carb days, which forces your body to burn fat as fuel.
Recap
Bodybuilders’ physique varies throughout the year depending on if they’re in-season or off-season. Competitors will have extremely low body fat percentages before a show. However, they’ll bulk during the off-season to build more muscle and balance their hormones.

Muscleman Kills Father-Of-Two With Punch Following Nightclub Incident, Sentenced To 11 Years In Prison

Robert Owen Greenhalgh has been sentenced for an incident where he killed a man at a nightclub.
In September, Robert Owen Greenhalgh killed Robert Smethurst, 36, following an incident at a nightclub. Smethurst suffered brain trauma and succumbed to injuries later that night. Recently, Greenhalgh pleaded guilty to manslaughter and has been sentenced to 11 years in prison.
On the night of the incident, it was reported that Smethurst, a father-of-two, stepped on Greenhalgh’s foot. Later in the night, Greenhalgh attacked Smethurst, who was celebrating his birthday at Luxe Lounge in Bradshawgate, Bolton. The incident occurred around 1:30 A.M.

Greenhalgh was sentenced by Judge Anthony Cross QC. He made a comment during the portion of the sentencing while Smethurst’s wife, Amanda, also spoke.
“Not for one moment did you consider that which you had done, other than to glory in your achievement and invite others to attack you,” Cross said.
“I was robbed of my husband, my best friend, my happiness and my future all in one,” amanda smethurst said. “How could someone be so violent and hateful towards my husband who did absolutely nothing to deserve this attack?
The love for my husband is overwhelming proof of what an incredible man he is. I miss him more than words could ever describe.”
Robert Owen Greenhalgh has no previous convictions but police learned of his violent history after he claimed he “knocked out” three people on one occasion. He was also open about his steroid and cocaine use. Prior to attending the club, Greenhalgh had been drinking and doing drugs with a friend.

Greenhalgh was found at a hotel in Leigh following the incident. Police found syringes with traces of testosterone and trenbolone used for the gym in his work van. Greenhalgh referenced the drugs he was using when discussing the event.
In the end, Robert Owen Greenhalgh will spend 11 years and three months in prison. He will serve two-thirds of the term in prison. After being released, Greenhalgh will have to observe an added three years and nine months on license.

After Scoring Massive KO, What’s Next for Tyson Fury?

After knocking out Dillian Whyte, what’s next for Tyson Fury?
After putting in a masterful performance against Dillian Whyte, what could be next for Tyson Fury? With so many different options on the table, there’s no shortage of opportunities for Fury. A match with one or two dangerous heavyweight boxers; a possible bout with a UFC champion; it’s clear that Fury has a number of options.
So what should be the next move for Tyson Fury? Let’s take a look at a few options for the WBC heavyweight champion.
Option 1: Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua Winner

Perhaps the most obvious choice for next match up is a battle between the winner of the Oleksandr Usyk vs Anthony Joshua rematch. Tyson Fury has yet to fight either man and a boxing match with either of the two would determine who the absolute king of the modern heavyweight division is.

While Anthony Joshua has a number of losses on his ledger, a match with him would undoubtedly be must see television. A bout against the undefeated Oleksandr Usyk would be just as compelling. Usyk soundly defeated Joshua and has a style that could potentially give Tyson Fury trouble.
Fighting either man would certainly be a welcome treat for the fans.
Option 2: Francis Ngannou

Perhaps one of the more intriguing options for Tyson Fury is a potential match up with UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. Having wanted to box got quite some time, Ngannou has been campaigning to show his striking in the boxing ring.
While the benefits for Francis Ngannou would be quite significant with a win or a loss, Tyson Fury may find the prospect of a match with the UFC champion less than enticing. If Fury beats Ngannou then it would come as no surprise. Should he lose to Ngannou it would be a major blemish on his record.
With that said it would definitely be an intriguing match up, one that would garner a great deal of attention.
Option 3: Retirement

The third option is one that could likely be the next move for the WBC champion. If what he said in the ring wasn’t a bargaining tactic, Tyson Fury could likely retire. No athlete can compete forever and Fury has already achieved a great deal during his tenure as heavyweight kingpin. With an epic trilogy of fights against Deontay Wilder under his belt, Fury has already cemented himself in the greatest of all time conversation.
If his final bout was indeed against Dillian Whyte then it’s safe to say Tyson Fury had one heck of a career.
What do you think Tyson Fury should do next?
