Coming into this event, Marcus Crowder, the defending champion, was certainly one to watch. (Maybe fill in how he did). Despite not being a pro, he is an elite competitor and showed that this year. (Maybe fill in how he did). In the 105k class, we noted that Nick Cambi and Tommy Sharp would be ones to watch, and these two definitely put on quite a show. (Maybe fill in how they did).

America’s Strongest Man Athlete Series: Josh Silvas

America’s Strongest Man Athlete Series: Josh Silvas

Get to know Josh Silvas as he prepares for the 2021 America’s Strongest Man contest.
Josh Silvas is from Canutillo, Texas, a little town just outside of El Paso. As someone who has always been athletic, Josh has been involved with sports since he was 5-years old. He hasn’t stopped since. Josh also always seemed to get in trouble for breaking things. For others, it was annoying. And now he understands why. He was a young buck from the great state of Texas preparing for his passion as a strongman.

A football player, Josh always sought to get stronger. That desire to have the ability to knock over any opponent was thrilling and he just wanted to be the strongest man in the world. But his coach had a vision for him that Josh couldn’t yet see. Once football ended, he started powerlifting and he loved getting stronger. But the sport wasn’t very fun.
So, Josh tried Strongman instead, thinking it would satisfy both needs of strength and fun. But he failed miserably. However, what came out of this may seem unexpected. He loved the sport. By failing, it proved to Josh that it wasn’t about physical strength, but also mental will. He wanted to exhaust his full genetic potential and Strongman truly does that. So through failure, a new passion was born and one that would keep him in Texas for the 2021 America’s Strongest Man contest.

Josh Silvas Routine
Training
When it comes to his training, Josh enjoys training with compound movements. Any exercise that can work more than one muscle to help him build strength is a win, but to keep up with the demand of stress of some of the more smaller muscles, he does a lot of accessory work to build up and prevent injury for those often times more vulnerable muscles. As competitions get closer, Josh will get familiar with the events required to really nail down the movement and proper form. He starts light and gradually builds to heavier weight, and with more experience for the movement, the heavier the weight he can go.

Nutrition
Josh focuses heavily on protein and carbs, mainly being chicken and rice. This allows him the carbs to fuel and power and workouts while also providing for energy, as well as the protein to really stimulate growth, enhance recovery, and help to keep him full for longer. After a tough workout, however, Josh loves to find the biggest, dirtiest burger around to really enjoy a meal.
Of course, having the right supplementation routine paired with your training and diet is imperative to boost those gains. Josh focuses on a protein powder, creatine, and glutamine. We all know a good protein powder can pump you with vital protein to aid in growth and recovery and that creatine will increase strength, improve your metabolism, and boost athletic performance. But glutamine is a great supplement to improve growth and assist recovery, making sure you optimize every aspect of your workout as best you can.

America’s Strongest Man Preparation & Event
In preparation for this event, Josh puts in the work three months prior to the event. In the last weeks leading up to the event, he wants to relax, recover, and bring his mental focus into a good place so he is ready to take on whatever challenge comes his way at the 2021 America’s Strongest Man contest. While he doesn’t have a particularly favorite event, the Husafell is a fairly demanding event that requires the most out of your both physically and mentally. Josh will be one to watch for this event to see just how well he has prepared to take down his other worthy competitors.

Keep an eye out for Josh in the deadlift. This event is certainly one of true strength and one of the best events of Josh’s career thus far is at the 2020 Strongman Corp Nationals contest during the Last Man Standing Deadlift. Josh went head to head with everyone and stood as the last man standing, lifting 881 pounds.
After America’s Strongest Man, Josh plans to compete on the pro circuit and begin his professional journey to winning World’s Strongest Man. Given his athletic past, sheer determination to be the best, and great approach to training, nutrition, and supplementation, this is most certainly a possibility for the Texan. When he isn’t competing, he enjoys having cookouts with his family, shooting, and journaling, all things to allow himself a break from the sport he loves so much.

In this event, athletes will be required to flip the four Fingal Fingers in order from lightest to heaviest. There will be split times with each Finger and the time stops when the Finger hits the pad on the other side. Competitors will have a 60 second time limit and can use gloves, chalk, sleeves, and a belt.

Athletes must control the log at all times with this event and it must touch the floor between each rep. There will be no releasing the log overhead and no split times. Cerberus Max Bag Toss
This event will see athletes establishing a max bag toss over 15 feet. For each weight attempt, the athlete will have 30 seconds from the judge’s “go” command to throw the bag over. Athletes don’t need to attempt every height but once a 30 second attempt is failed, they are eliminated. If for some reason the bag is stuck on top of the apparatus, it counts as a successful throw. MW men will start at 40 lbs. and HW men will start at 50.5 lbs.
Cerberus Sandbag Carry and Load Medley
For this medley, athletes will carry sandbags from lightest to heaviest and load it onto a flatbed trailer. The distance is 20 feet and there is a 60 second time limit. Athletes will be able to skip lifts but once you miss on one, they are eliminated. Athletes will use a Rogue Ohio Deadlift Bar and can use straps, chalk, sleeves, and a belt. MW men will start at 675 lbs. and HW men will start at 745 lbs.
Texas Power Concepts Texas Stone Carry
In this event, the athlete will pick the stone off the floor and carry it as far as possible. The stone must be carried in front of the body and cannot be shouldered. Turns are set at 50 feet and athletes must touch the line or put their foot past the line before turning around. Athletes will use a Texas Power Concepts plate loadable shield-shaped Husafell Stone with MW men using 360 lbs. and HW men using 400 lbs.

Iron Biby Sets Log Lift World Record Of 229kg

Iron Biby Sets Log Lift World Record Of 229kg

Iron Biby has reached a world record that has stood for years now.
Chieck Sanou, better known as Iron Biby, has been a force in the log lift for years now. He has been after the world record of 228kg but has not been able to take that step — until this weekend. On Sept. 18 at the Giants Live World Tour Finals, Iron Biby set a new world record with a 229kg lift.
Iron Biby stepped up in front of an energetic crowd in Glasgow, Scotland and performed a lift that has never been done before. He broke the previous world record of 228kg that was set by Zydrunas Savickas back in 2015.

You can find the full video of Sanou’s lift on the Instagram page of fellow strongman Eddie Hall. Make sure to watch the celebration at the end.

Iron Biby even pulled out a cartwheel at the end to celebrate with the roaring crowd. It makes sense when a record of six years falls.

Savickas has dominated the log lift for years now. He has many of the top lifts and he say comfortably at the top for years now. This is a mark that Iron Biby had been training to reach. He has made regular lifts within reach of the 228kg mark and even hit the number in a training session back in 2019.
The log lift is a movement that has been on a quick rise over the years. The weight has gotten significantly higher for lifters compared to a decade ago. Iron Biby is a reason for this and there is a chance that he holds this record for quite some time. Barring a comeback from Savickas in hopes of regaining his world record, Sanou could be at the top for awhile and even continue to build on his own record.
It is unknown if Savickas will do this but what we do know is that Iron Biby is the new king. In the video, he showed great control and strength that comes from years of training. It would not be surprising to see Sanou continue to improve and set a higher mark moving forward.

Hafthor Bjornsson Vs Devon Larratt Fight Crashes Core Sports Website

Hafthor Bjornsson Vs Devon Larratt Fight Crashes Core Sports Website

Core Sports website suffers outages seemingly due to popularity of Thor Bjornsson Vs Devon Larratt boxing match.
We are mere hours away from the much anticipated Hafthor Bjornsson vs Devon Larratt boxing match. And it seems that users who have purchased the PPV are not able to view the stream – at least, not on the Core Sports official website. The Core Sports website has crashed for many users – citing a database error.
What originally started as a Hafthor vs Eddie Hall strongmen-turned-boxers mega fight – the premiere event suffered some setbacks and a few lineup changes. This was largely due to Eddie Hall suffering an injury and needing to drop out of the match. With the strongman match postponed for now – Bjornsson agreed to match up with Devon Larratt. The title fight is to take place today at 4pm EST.

But it seems those who wish to Hafhtor Bjornsson fight are now facing another hurder – as the official website of the live stream is currently suffering outage issues. At the time of this writing no official statement has been made by Core Sports. It seems as if the overwhelming popularity of the fight has caused the website to crash.
Technically, the PPV event has already begun – with other fights on the card leading up to the headliner match of Hafhtor Bjornsson vs Devon Larratt. With a mere hours away, fans are hoping the issue is resolved in time.

In the latest promotional Instagram post made by Core Sports – many fans have flooded the comments stating that they cannot watch the stream or even load the website without an error message:

Hafthor Bjornsson vs Devon Larratt: The Story So Far
Leading up to the fight, Thor Bjornsson has been working on his boxing skills with consistency for over a year and a half now and has made some great strides. The skills he’s been able to build have been truly impressive and show that he has more than enough talent to acquit himself well against professional boxers. His transformation weight loss and shred has also garnered much attention in both the strongman and boxing worlds.
Devon Larratt on the other hand has little to no boxing experience. The champion arm wrestler recently admitted he’s a terrible boxer ahead of his match with Thor Bjornsson. While arm wrestlers are known for their immense strength, you need more than power to be able to be a successful boxer. Devon Larratt certainly has a uphill battle ahead of him.

This kind of website overload isn’t necessarily a new story in the history of popular streaming events. HBO’s massively popular Game Of Thrones series often suffered website and streaming outages during series finales and premieres – due to the overwhelming popularity of the show.
Unlike Game Of Thrones, however, this is a PPV event with fans paying specifically for this one singular stream. As a live sporting event – this kind of outage is painfully frustrating to those looking to see the fight live – and those looking to get their money’s worth.
Some fans have commented that the Core Sports app has faired better with logging into the stream. If you are set to watch and having trouble connecting to the website – try visiting app.coresports.tv and logging in with your account. Generation Iron has not confirmed that this technique works – but it may be helpful for those worried of missing the headlining event.
This story is still developing – so stay tuned to Generation Iron Fitness Network for more updates and results for the match as they become available!

America’s Strongest Man Athlete Series: Marcus Crowder

America’s Strongest Man Athlete Series: Marcus Crowder

Get to know Marcus Crowder as he prepares for the 2021 America’s Strongest Man contest.
Marcus Crowder is from Mebane, North Carolina and was always surrounded by health and fitness. At a young age, Marcus basically grew up in his father’s gym, a gym he opened when Marcus was just 5-years old. That athletic instinct led to his love of football, and although Marcus had a larger frame, he moved well and decided to take it to the next level. Entering college at Coastal Carolina, he played football while studying for a degree in Communications. But Strongman took over and Marcus decided on a different route.

When Marcus was in the third grade, he watched Strongman on television and fell in love. The ability to see some of the strongest athletes on Earth lift, pull, and manipulate insane amounts of weights was appealing and something Marcus just fell for. While he would appear on the smaller end for a strongman, the speed he developed playing football has proved to be fruitful, and he still continues to work on speed.
Marcus’ first competition was the 2016 North Carolina Strongest Man contest where he ended up taking third place. From there, his Strongman journey was only just beginning.

Marcus Crowder’s Routine
Training
When it comes to his training, Marcus will look at the upcoming event and tailor his days towards that specifically. Normally, his training days consist of two heavier days, two lighter days, and a Strongman movement day to really nail down form and logistics for those unique Strongman lifts.

For exercises, there is an order Marcus relies on to build real strength and these exercises are some of the most important for him. These include the deadlift, overhead press, squat, and bench press. While these are imperative to his training, some of his favorites are pretty much anything else that involves a pressing motion like the giant circus dumbbell or log press. He also enjoys yoke runs.
Nutrition
For nutrition, Marcus really eats what he wants, and as a heavy weight, no one can blame him. Fueling up and taking in adequate amounts of calories is vital for powering his growth, but also recovery. He tries to get in as many whole foods as possible, but as competition time rolls around, he eats what he can get down. Since nerves start to play a bit more of a role, managing the stress and anxiety of a contest is key, especially as he looks to continue his Strongman dominance. However, after a hard lift, he won’t hesitate to enjoy a meal from Chipotle.
As someone who knows the nutritional value in supplements and what they can do for his overall health and performance, Marcus enjoys taking a pre-workout and creatine supplement to boost energy, offer increased blood flow, and build strength and size while aiding in recovery.

America’s Strongest Man Preparation & Event
With a couple weeks to go until America’s Strongest Man, Marcus works to make his body as healthy as possible, putting cardio in where he needs to as well. His recovery routine includes red light therapy, dry needling, sports massage, and an adjustment once a week. This prep has been one of the best for Marcus in a while, setting him up for only the best success at this year’s contest.

Looking towards the event itself, Marcus is excited for the log reps. The event is a 355 lbs. log that competitors will clean and press for max reps in one minute and for Marcus, he has put a lot of emphasis on the clean. His pressing strength is there, but looking to have a fast and efficient clean will really put him in a good spot to take charge in this event. In preparation for this, he will go to about 200-250 lbs. and do 2-3 sets of cleans for 8 reps, sometimes more. The key will be getting his cardio up to speed.
One event Marcus has put a lot of attention towards is the Husafell stone carry for max distance. But in efforts to make this event a strong one, he has changed his training approach. By staying at a lighter weight, he does more sets at 200 feet, but sometimes more. This will hopefully help with the 400 lbs. stone and Marcus will be one to watch in this event.

While America’s Strongest Man is his primary focus for these next few weeks, he does plan on competing at the Official Strongman Games in November. Along with Strongman, Marcus is also a powerlifter with a squat at 815 lbs., a deadlift at 810 lbs., and a 600 lbs. bench. His gym lifts have seen a 606 lbs. bench press and a 851 lbs. deadlift, and as a determined competitor, Marcus will continue to push this weight.
But for now, Marcus has his sights set on America’s Strongest Man as he hopes to take this event and the top spot. With a good training, recovery, nutrition, and supplement routine, Marcus has prepared and is ready to show off what he has at the 2021 America’s Strongest Man contest.

Benefits Of The Circus Dumbbell For Strongman Strength

Benefits Of The Circus Dumbbell For Strongman Strength

What started at the circus is by no means a laughable lift.
When we look at a Strongman event, the uniqueness of each exercise is part of the spectacle. Watching strongmen and strongwomen lift logs overhead, pull trucks, deadlift ungodly amounts of weight, and perform the medley which not one of us dare touch can be exhilarating, even from the comfort from our couch as we munch on cheese puffs and encourage them to lift more. It’s impressive, and while we may not engage in that form of training and competition, it is fun to imagine what that would be like nonetheless.
But let’s the scene for something really quick. You’re at the turn of 19th/20th century and someone offers to take you to the circus. A grand tent, beautiful spectacle of colors, animals, and performers. Probably a tight roper walker, maybe someone wrangling a tiger. Suddenly, the ring master brings out what looks like a massive dumbbell, bigger than anything you’ve seen before. He points to you and wants you to come down. So, you do. He instructs you to lift the weight. Simple, right? So you try. It doesn’t budge. The crowd laughs, the ringmaster chuckles at your misfortune, but you simply cannot lift this weight. A Strongman appears, shirtless, wearing tight, colorful pants. The crowd now erupts in laughter. He walks over, grips this massive handle, and effortlessly, lifts this giant dumbbell overhead. The crowd cheers and you’ve just experienced one of the oldest Strongman events of all time: the circus dumbbell.
As a fun staple in Strongman events and a serious test of overhead pressing capabilities, the circus dumbbell has stood the test of time. Let’s take a closer look at the circus dumbbell. From what it is, to the benefits of it, and even how to perform it, this event can be a fun exercise if you have access to this giant dumbbell. A spectacle of an event can make for a fun and engaging workout.
What Is The Circus Dumbbell?
The circus dumbbell is essentially an oversized dumbbell with a very large grip and longer in length. While this is mainly used in the traditional sense of a Strongman event being the one-arm overhead press, the circus dumbbell has great uses for many other exercises like farmer’s carries, swings, rows, and anything where a dumbbell is your main piece of equipment by choice.

Due to its sheer size and awkward grip, this is a unique training tool that can make a workout quite difficult. The grip is unique in that it requires a certain level of grip strength, so strong wrists and forearms are required, and the length can be challenging especially when going overhead.

Benefits Of The Circus Dumbbell
Develop Upper Body Strength
The sheer mass of this dumbbell will improve upper body strength as you recruit many muscle groups to get this weight overhead. The movement, which requires certain muscles at different stages of the lift, will certainly help with that muscle growth you want to see as you get stronger and more efficient with it.  Not only are your larger muscle groups worked, but those smaller stabilizer and assistance muscles you so desperately seek to grow. For developing upper body strength, the circus dumbbell is a great option.
Challenge Your Core
The necessity of your core with this lift is imperative as it requires the utmost balance and support to really get that weight lifted overhead. Helping you stay grounded, your core will be engaged and braced as it will challenge your ability to stay as stable as possible. While this may not work your core to oblivion like other ab exercises, it certainly will challenge it.

Enhance Grip Strength
Grip strength is something often times overlooked for we never really think about why we exactly need it. But it helps with functional movements and everyday activities, as well as those big lifts especially as we increase in weight. The massive size of this handle is enough to challenge grip and requires strong forearms and wrists, both of which we tend to ignore. With the help of this lift, it will illuminate how strong of grip strength you have, or make you think about ways to really enhance that grip strength.
Have Fun With An Old School Strongman Lift
We are always looking for ways to challenge ourselves and add variety in our workouts. This lift is one way to do so. By incorporating a fun and challenging Strongman lift, especially one with history, our gains will not only grow, but we will have fun doing so. Approaching a challenge like this should be fun and while we want to compete with others, sometimes its best to start competing with ourselves.

How To Perform The Circus Dumbbell
Here are the steps for performing this dumbbell lift:
Begin in a squat stance with the dumbbell in the middle of your feet. Grabbing the dumbbell, drop your hips and pull your chest up, similar to a deadlift. Then, pick the dumbbell off the floor with an explosive movement and guide to a press. This will be about at your shoulder. You can use your free hand to help guide it to your shoulder.
Once in this position, get yourself in a stable place to lift the weight overhead. You can use your free hand to help guide you and get set-up. Remember to engage your core and feel grounded and stable throughout your body.
Now it’s time for the press. Remove your free hand and perform a slight dip, then hoisting the dumbbell overhead, locking out the arm. Gently lower back to the ground and repeat for your desired number of reps.
Wrap Up
The circus dumbbell is an old and storied Strongman lift that can provide for a fun way to add diversity to your workouts. With benefits towards your strength and stability, this can really challenge you physically and mentally as if you were under the bright lights of the Strongman stage. With proper form and real overhead pressing efficiency, you will be well on your way to lifting big like the pros.

Brian Shaw Takes Down Poster of Arnold Schwarzenegger in His Gym

Brian Shaw Takes Down Poster of Arnold Schwarzenegger in His Gym

Brian Shaw Takes Down Poster of Arnold Schwarzenegger in His Gym

So it appears that the fallout continues for Arnold Schwarzenegger after his recent comments. Brian Shaw is another in a list of athletes, sponsors, and supplement company heads who have an issue with Arnold’s freedom comments. Brian Shaw is so upset that he actually took down a poster of Arnold Schwarzenegger in his home gym.

Freedom is a thing that a great deal of people hold dear, particularly in the United States. The idea of freedom is what the country was founded on. Yet in reality the country has a muddled past with the concept of freedom. After what many have viewed as an attack on the concept of freedom, fans, athletes, and competitors in the bodybuilding community have expressed their disappointment in the recent comments made by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
While it can be argued that Arnold’s comments were about people being responsible and helping their fellow man, people are not taking it that way. One such person is four-time World’s Strongest Man Brian Shaw.
A proud American, Brian Shaw found the comments made by Arnold Schwarzenegger to be upsetting. Shaw took to Instagram to express his own feelings on the matter and that he took down a poster of Schwarzenegger that hung in his home gym.

FREEDOM IS IMPORTANT ??
Today is a very sad day for me as I had to take down the poster of @schwarzenegger on the wall of my gym. I have had a poster of him in my gym since I started training.
He has the freedom to say whatever he wants and that’s part of being an American citizen but him saying “screw your freedom” did not sit well with me and therefore it was time for his poster to come down from my gym wall.
Freedom didn’t come free and I will always stand for freedom ??

We could continue to see fall out from this situation as time moves forward. Only time will tell how much more this will affect Arnold Schwarzenegger and his brand.
