Just trial and error. The calves are always under load. Also in my case I can kill them and 2 days later they are stronger. I've tried everything else with little to no growth. Something has to make them grow. If they recover from 650lb donkey calf raises and 450lb barbell raises in 2 days then they can take more.
I think many aspects of human adaptation are overlooked when they should be applied to bodybuilding.
For instance my younger brother required 10 hours of sleep a night to even function when he was 19. After returning from multiple deployments and 7 years in the Marine Corp, he can't sleep more than 2 - 3 hours a night. Sometimes he doesn't sleep. He is natural, but extremely strong and well built and continues to make progress. At 5'5 170lbs he is lean and does incline DB presses with 100lb DB's for 12+ reps. Adaptation

I agree with The Dude, since they are used literally everyday pretty much all day, they can handle a huge load. Yes, you'll want to give them a rest which is why I don't train them everyday, but they can handle a large load of work
