Damn, I'm sorry to hear that. You must have torn both tendons pretty severely - usually doctors don't want to do surgery unless a tear is greater than halfway through. After two years, I'm surprised they'll even attempt surgery on an incomplete tear. From what I read, surgery outcomes quickly become less positive with the passage of time after the injury. They are getting more ambitious with surgery all the time, though.
I partially tore my ACL and got multiple partial tears along with a huge hematoma in my left quad last summer. It took several months in a brace and on crutches, but mine healed alright without surgery. There were lots of tears, but nothing big enough for the doc to sew up, and it looked like I had a softball buried in my thigh. It really sucked while it was healing and was very sore, so I know what you're going through. It's not fun running up huge bills at the radiologist and orthopedist, either. I was very happy to find out from the MRI that the knot was pooled blood and not rolled up muscle like the orthopedist orginally thought, and that none of the tendon tears were complete.
Also, I don't have a good story, either. I was just walking down the sidewalk carrying some stuff. As soon as my foot hit the ground on a step, my knee popped and shot out from under me. Dumbass that I am, I just kept walking on it for a couple of weeks and tore my quad a little more trying to catch myself from falling every time my knee buckled after that. Apparently, "walk it off" is not the proper treatment for knee sprains
I do hope you recover quickly and fully once you've gone through with the surgery.
