This is my first post so I thought I'd say Hi to everybody!
I've been out of the game for a while, but I'm slowly getting back into it and am currently training at home. Since I've started training without a partner I've noticed something strange. I train with the idea that I do a warm up set of 15-25 reps then I do 5 sets of heavy 4-6 reps (to failure!) then I do 4 sets with fifty percent of that weight to failure hopefully getting between 10- 20 reps.
The weird thing is, on the last for sets I'm lucky if I can get even 1-2 more reps than the heavy sets! After a few weeks of experiencing this halfway through my lighter sets I changed back to the heavy weight and could still manage the same rep range. So what's wrong! How come my muscles (after the warm up!) dont seem to be able to tell the difference between a heavy weight and one half it's size?
Also I have tried training a few session with lower weights and been able to get every set (to failure!) in the Higher range of 8-15 reps so I don't think its a question of muscular endurance!
Any help/answers would be much appreciated!
Cheers!

Welcome to MC. I got to run but some other bro's will help out.

Welcome to the board-Since you were away from the gym for a time I don't believe that you have given your muscles a chance to gain back some of their endurance so at this point they are fatigued from the waqrm-ups and heavy sets.

Welcome first of all.
Second what are you trying for? Cutting or bulking? To me it sounds like you are doing way to many sets/reps. A good way to over train and miss gains all together.

Most likely, your general fitness has deteriorated due to lack of training. This may cause you to produce an overabundance of lactic acid which will bathe the muscles and prevent contraction. As your fitness level improves, your anaerobic threshold will rise, you'll produce less lactic acid, and your body will become more efficient at removing this wasteful byproduct and converting it back into glucose (Cori cycle).

My goals at the moment are to lose some alcohol/take away related fat. I didn't really lose much muscle with the exception of my legs, I've gone from 212 lbs to 240lbs. I am only doing 9 sets per bodypart per week!
If I start the workout with a moderate weight I can hit a range of 10-15 reps to failure throughout the workout. But if I Introduce just one heavy set to failure I find it damn near impossible to pass the 4-6 rep range no matter what the weight (Within reason) But I can still manage the heavy weight in the following sets!
